There are more male slaves females since their physical strength gives them an advantage for strenuous labor in the plantations.
Women served either as field slaves, or as domestic slaves by being cooks, servants, or nannies. Although domestic slaves had better access to food, clothing, and other necessities, these women also faced significant challenges as they were vulnerable to sexual exploitation and abuse by their owners (National Museum of Denmark, n.d.). Some women were also obligated by their owners to give birth to increase the number of slaves they own.
It is reported that as part of the slave labor system, some children were forced to work from a young age, even before they turned six (National Museum of Denmark, n.d.).
